CLEADON, a township in the parish of WHITBURN,
eastern division of CHESTER ward, county palatine of
DURHAM, 3 miles (N. by W.) from Sunderland. The
population is returned with the parish. Limestone is
obtained in this township; and near Marston rock is
found a species of indurated marl, in thin laminae, very
pliant, and hence termed flexible limestone.
