CLIVE, a chapelry in that part of the parish of ST-MARY which is within the liberties of the town of SHREWSBURY, county of SALOP, 3 miles (S.) from Wem, containing 306 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, within the jurisdiction of the court of the royal peculiar of St. Mary, in Shrewsbury, endowed with £400 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Mayor and Head-master of the free grammar school of Shrewsbury. The chapel is dedicated to All Saints. William Wycherley, the poet and comic writer, was born here, in 1640.
