COATES, a parish in the hundred of CROWTHORNE-and-MINETY, county of GLOUCESTER, 3 miles (W. by S.) from Cirencester, containing 309 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Gloucester, rated in the king's books at £9- 6. 8., and in the patronage of William Tombs, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Matthew. The Thames and Severn canal is crossed by a bridge on the line of the old Ackmaiiway, as it passes through this parish. In the neighbourhood is Trewsbury castle, also vestiges of a Roman encampment.
