COATES, a parish in the western division of the wapentake of ASLACOE, parts of LINDSEY, county of LINCOLN, 9 miles (N. W. by N.) from Lincoln, containing 45 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Stow, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £3. 16. 8., endowed with £600 royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant; it is held by sequestration. The church is dedicated to St. Edith.
