COMPTON, a parish in the hundred of BUDDLESGATE, Fawley division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 2 miles (S. S. W.) from Winchester, containing 267 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the incumbent, rated in the king's books at £ 23. 6.8., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Winchester. The church, dedicated to All Saints, is small, and has portions in various styles of architecture, the Norman predominating. Compton is within the jurisdiction of the Cheyney Court held at Winchester every Thursday, for the recovery of debts to any amount. The Itchen line of navigation passes through this parish.
