COWBIT, a parish in the wapentake of ELLOE, parts of HOLLAND, county of LINCOLN, 5§ miles (N. by E.) from Crowland, containing 511 inhabitants.' The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln, and in the patronage of the Devisees of Mrs. Miller. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, was, with the cemetery, consecrated in 1486, by Bishop Russell. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. In 1712, Joseph Andrew endowed a school with £12. 10. per annum, arising from a bequest of land.
