COWDON (GREAT-and-LITTLE), a parish partly in the middle, but chiefly in the northern, division of the wapentake of HOLDERNESS, East riding of the county of YORK, containing . 146 inhabitants. Great Cowdon is 14 miles, and Little Cowdon 12f, (N. B.) from Kingston upon Hull. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of the East riding, and diocese, of York, rated in the king's books at £2.13.4., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church has long been swallowed up by the sea, and the parish is commonly considered a township partly in the parish of Aldborough, but chiefly in the parish of Mappleton.
