COWLING, a parish in the hundred of RISBRIDGE, county of SUFFOLK, 8 miles (N.N.W.) from Clare, containing 790 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Norwich, endowed with £200 royal bounty, and £1000 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to St. Margaret. There are fairs on the 31st of July and the 17th of October.
