CROPTON, a township in the parish of MIDDLETON, PICKERING lythe, North riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles (N. W". by N.) from Pickering, containing 321 inhabitants. There is a place of .worship for Wesleyan Methodists. An estate forming part of the parish charity lands, producing about £23 per annum, has been appropriated to the support of a school in which twelve children are educated. There are various tumuli within the township, thought to be British, and .a high mount called Cropton Castle, at the base of which are distinct traces of a Roman road, and near it vestiges of a Roman camp.
