CRUMPSALL, a township in the parish of MANCHESTER, hundred of SALFORD, county palatine of LANCASTER, 2 miles (N. by W.) from Manchester, containing 910 inhabitants. In 1785, two cottages were erected by John Bowker and John Taylor, for the purpose of a school, which are now let for £22 per annum, & 13 of which is paid in support of St. Mark's charity school, Cheetham. Humphrey Chetham, founder of Manchester college, or Blue-coat hospital, was born here, in 1580.
