EASTWELL, a parish in the hundred of WYE, lathe of SCRAY, county of KENT, 3 miles (N.) from Ashford, containing 134 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury, rated in the king's books at £9. 16. 8., and in the patronage of the Earl of Winchelsea and Nottingham. The church is an ancient structure, dedicated to St. Mary. The register of this parish is said to have contained the entry of the burial of Richard Plantagenet, natural son to King Richard III., who, having fled hither after the battle of Bosworth, was protected by Sir Thomas Moyle, lord of the manor, and died in 1550, at a small house erected by his permission, at the age of 81.
