EBONY, a chapelry in the parish of APPLEDORE, partly in the hundred of TENTERDEN, lathe of SCRAY, but chiefly in the hundred of OXNEY, lathe of SHELWAY, county of KENT, 4 miles (S.E.) from Tenterden, containing 151 inhabitants. The chapel, dedicated to St. Mary, stands on the site of a larger and more ancient edifice, which was destroyed by lightning early in the reign, of Elizabeth. The Grand Military canal passes through that part of the chapelry which is in the lathe of Scray, and the river Rother runs along the southern boundary.
