ELLINGHAM, a parish in the southern division of BAMBROUGH ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, comprising the townships of North Charlton, South Charlton, Chathill, East Ditchburn, West Ditchburn, Doxford, Ellingham, Preston, and Shipley, and containing 1027 inhabitants, of which number, 257 are in the township of Ellingham, 8 miles (N.) from Alnwick. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Durham, rated in the king's books at £6. 5. 5., and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Durham. The church, dedicated to St. Maurice, which stands at a short distance from the village, was founded by Ranulph de Guagy, in the twelfth century, and rebuilt a few years ago, A free school was erected by subscription on the glebe land, in 1821; the master receives £ 5 a year from the trustees of Lord Crewe, which is augmented to £20 by voluntary contributions. Coal and limestone are obtained in the parish.
