ESCOMBE, a chapelry (parochial), in the north-western division of DARLINGTON ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 1 mile (W.) from Bishop-Auckland, containing 232 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Durham, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £400 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Bishop of Durham. There is an extensive colliery at Etherley-lane, a hamlet in this chapelry.
