FEWSTON, a parish in the lower division of the
wapentake of CLARO, West riding of the county of
YORK, comprising the townships of Blubberhouses, Clifton
with Norwood, Fewston, Thurcross, and Great
Timble, and containing 1989 inhabitants, of which
number, 610 are in the township of Fewston, 7 miles
(N. by W.) from Otley. The living is a discharged vicarage,
in the peculiar jurisdiction of the court for the
honour of Knaresborough, rated in the king's books at
£5, endowed with £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage
of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St.
Mary Magdalene.
