FONTHILL (GIFFORD), a parish in the hundred of DUNWORTH, county of WILTS, 1 mile (S.E.) from Hindon, containing 471 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £ 13.10., and in the patronage of the Executors of the late Mr. Farquhar. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas. In this parish was the magnificent mansion belonging to William Beckford, Esq., called Fonthill Abbey.
