GEORGE (ST.), a parish in the hundred of BARTON-REGIS, county of GLOUCESTER, 2 miles (E.) from Bristol, containing 5334 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage not in charge, in the archdeaconry of Dorset, and diocese of Bristol, and in the patronage of the Mayor and Corporation of Bristol. The church Was consecrated in 1756. This place, which is bounded on the south by the Avon, was constituted a distinct parish by act of parliament in the 24th of George II., having been previously part of the out-parish of St. Philip and St. Jacob, Bristol; and was called Easton (East-town) from its situation, and more anciently Bertune. Many coal pits are worked in the parish, some of which arc of a very unusual depth. There are several small bequests for the education of children. Anciently there was an hospital for lepers, dedicated to St. Lawrence.
