GLANTON, a township in the parish of WHITTINGHAM, northern division of CoatiETDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 9 miles (W.) from Alnwick, containing 474 inhabitants. There is a place of worship for Presbyterians; and the township has recently been much improved by the erection of several handsome houses. On a lofty eminence called Glanton Pike was formerly a beacon. Several stone coffins, and urns containing pieces of charcoal and burnt bones, were discovered about 17l6 also weapons which evidently belonged to the Britons. There is a petrifying well, at the bottom of which shell marl is found.
