GOTHAM, a parish in the southern division of the wapentake of RUSHCLIFFE, county of NOTTINGHAM, 7s miles (S.S.W.) from Nottingham, containing 625 inha- bitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £ 19. 8. 6., and in the patronage of Lord St. John, the Duke of Portland, Earl Howe, and George Savile Foljambe, Esq., in rotation. The church is dedicated to St. Lawrence. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. A school is supported by the voluntary contributions of Earl Howe and the rector. Limestone and gypsum are obtained in the parish; the latter, when burnt and pulverised, makes an excellent plaister for floors.
