GREENHAM, a chapelry in that part of the parish of THATCHAM which is in the hundred of FAIRCROSS, county of BERKS, 1 mile (S. E.) from Newbury, containing 947 inhabitants. The chapel was given with Thatcham to Reading abbey by Henry I., from which period ithas been considered a chapel of ease to the for mer, and has lately received an addition of one hundred and twenty sittings, of which seventy are free, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £30 towards defraying the expense. The Knights Hospitallers had a preceptory here before the time of Henry VI.
