GRINDON, a parish in the north-eastern division of STOCKTON ward, county palatine of DURHAM, comprising the townships of Grindon and Whitton, and containing 314 inhabitants, of which number, 255 are in the township of Grindon, 5 miles (N.N.W.) from Stockton upon Tees. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Durham, rated in the lung's books at £4. 11. 5., endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and-in the patronage of the Master and Brethren of Sherbourn Hospital. The church, dedicated to St. Thomas a Becket, stands alone, about one mile and a half to the eastward of the Durham and Stockton road; there is a stone coffin in the churchyard, inscribed " Roger de Foulthorp."
