HALE, a parish in ALLERDALE ward above Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 2 miles (S.E.) from Egremont, containing, with the hamlet of Wilton, 249 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £800 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Earl of Lorisdale. The church, which has a small tower and spire, stands at a short distance from the village. Freestone and limestone abound in the parish.
