HAMBLE-en-le-RICE, a parish, in the hundred of MANSBRIDGE, Fawley division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 4 miles (S.E.) from Southampton, containing 421 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy with the vicarage of Hound, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester, endowed with £1000 royal bounty. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. The parish is bounded on the south by Southampton water. An alien priory of Cistercian monks, a cell to the abbey of Tirone, in France, dedicated to St. Andrew, was founded here in the time of Henry Blois, Bishop of Winchester; at the suppression, it was granted to New College, Oxford.
