HAMPSTEAD (EAST), a parish comprising the hamlet of Bracknell, in the hundred of COOKHAM, but chiefly in the hundred of RIPPLESMERE, county of BERKS, 4 miles (E. S. E.) from Wokingham, containing 615 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £9. 1. 3., and in the patronage of the Dean and Canons of Christ Church, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene. There are several chalybeate springs in the parish, and a Roman military work, called Cssar's camp.
