HATFIELD-BROAD-OAK, or HATFIELD-REGIS,
a parish in the hundred of HARLOW, county of ESSEX,
6 miles (N. E. by E.) from Harlow, comprising the townships
of Brumsend-quarter, Heath-quarter, Town-quarter,
and Woodrow-quarter, and containing 1693 inhabitants.
The living is a discharged vicarage, in the jurisdiction
of the Commissary of Essex and Herts, concurrently
with the Consistorial Court of the Bishop of
London, rated in the king's books at £7. li., and in the
patronage of the Master and Fellows of Trinity ColWe
Cambridge. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, comprises
portions in the later English style, with some of an
earlier date. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan
Methodists. Here are some almshouses. Adjoining the
church, which was then conventual, stood a priory of
Black canons, founded by Albeni de Vere, in 1135, and
dedicated to God, St. Mary, and St. Melanius Redenensis,
the revenue of which, at the time of the dissolution,
