HAUGHTON, a township in the parish of SIMONBOURN, north-western division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 6 miles (N. by W.) from Hexham, containing 127 inhabitants. Haughton castle is a strong, spacious structure, surmounted by five square turrets: it was formerly surrounded by walls, and there are yet the ruins of a chapel about three hundred yards from it. A paper-mill was built here in 1788, which is now in operation.
