HEWISH, a parish in the hundred of SWANBOROUGH,
county of WILTS, 3 miles (N.N.W.) from Pewsey,
containing 112 inhabitants. The living is a rectory,
in the archdeaconry of Wilts, and diocese of Salisbury,
rated in the king's books at £ 8. 6. 8., and in
the patronage of the Trustees of the Froxfield almshouses.
The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas. A
college, or almshouses, for thirty widows of laymen and
twenty of clergymen, was founded at Froxfield, in 1690,
by Sarah, Duchess of Somerset, and endowed with the
proceeds of this manor.
