HILTON, a township in that part of the parish of
WOLVERHAMPTON which is in the eastern division of
the hundred of CUTTLESTONE, county of STAFFORD, 4
miles (N.E. byN.) from Wolverhampton, containing 55
inhabitants. Here was anciently a chapel, which was dedicated
to St. John the Baptist, but it has been demolished.
A Cistercian abbey, in honour of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, was founded in I"223, by Henry de Audley,
the revenue of which, at the dissolution, was estimated
at £89. 10. 1.
