HODNET, a parish in the Drayton division of the
hundred of BRADFORD (North), county of SALOP,
6 miles (S. W.) from Drayton in Hales, containing,
with the joint chapelry of Weston with Wixhill under
Red Castle, 2117 inhabitants. The living is a rectory,
in the archdeaconry of Salop, and diocese of Lichfield
and Coventry, rated in the king's books at £26. 0. 10.
Richard Heber, Esq. was patron in 1823. The church
is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. Lord Clive,
celebrated for his extension of the British empire in
India, was born, at Styche in this parish, in 1724;
Reginald Heber, D.D., an erudite divine and refined
scholar, late Bishop of Calcutta, was also born here in
1783; he died in India in 1826.
