HORTON, a parish in the hundred of STOKE, county of BUCKINGHAM, 1 mile (S.S.W.) from Coinbrook, containing 796 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £22. 9. 4. The Rev. W. Browne was patron in 1796. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, contains a doorway with a circular arch, enriched with Saxon mouldings, and is surrounded by a Roman wall. A large paper-mill on the banks of the Coin affords employment to between forty and fifty persons. The Colnbrook cattle fair is held in this parish. The parents of Milton the poet resided here, and his mother, who died in 1637, is interred in the church; a few of the juvenile years of the poet himself were passed at this place.
