HOUGHTON, a township in the parish of MANCHESTER, hundred of SALFORD, county palatine of LANCASTER, 3 miles (N.E.) from Stockport, containing 2084 inhabitants.. The name is probably a corruption of High Town, from the district being the most elevated part of the parish of Manchester. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. The manufacture of cotton goods and hats affords employment to about seven hundred and fifty persons. An abundance of coal is obtained in this township.
