IRTON, a parish in ALLERDALE ward above Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 4 miles (N. by E.) from Ravenglass, containing, with the joint township of Santon with Melthwaite, 566 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £1000 royal bounty, and in the patronage of Lord Muncaster. The church is dedicated to St. Paul. The rivers Irt and Mite run through the parish. A great variety of granite is obtained near Irton hall. Henry Caddy, in 1716, gave £ 150 towards the foundation of a free school; which sum, with .accumulations and an allotment of land assigned at the time of the enclosure, produces about £ 12 per annum for the master.
