KELSALE, a parish in the hundred of HOXNE, county of SUFFOLK, 1 mile (N.) from Saxmundham, containing 1060 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, consolidated hi 1679 with that of Carlton, in the archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the Icing's books at £20. 0. 5. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. A free school for the instruction of the children of all the inhabitants is supported by various ancient grants: the salary of the master is £50 per annum, for which he likewise teaches the scholars of a Sunday school: from the same funds poor children are also apprenticed.
