KENTMERE, a chapelry in that part of the parish of KENDAL which is in KENDALward, county of WESTMORLAND, 9 miles (N. N. W.) from Kendal, containing 212 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £600 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Land-owners. There are quarries of blue slate and limestone in this township. The river Kent, which rises a little to the northward, forms a lake here one mile in length. Bernard Gilpin, an eminent divine, was born at this place in 1517.
