KERSEY, a parish in the hundred of COSFORD, county of SUFFOLK, 1 mile (N. W. by w.) from Hadleigh, containing 621 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Norwich, and in the patronage of the Provost and Fellows of King's College, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. In 1580, Robert Nightingale bequeathed 40s. per annum for the instruction of poor children, also a tenement, since rebuilt by the parish, for the residence of three poor families. Here was a priory of canons of the order of St. Augustine, dedicated to St. Mary and St. Anthony, but the periods of its foundation and dissolution are unknown.
