KIRK-LINTON, or KIRK-LEVINGTON, a parish in ESKDALE ward, county of CUMBERLAND, 4 miles (E. by S.) from Longtown, comprising the townships of Hethersgill, -Middle Quarter, and West Linton, or Levington, and containing 1931mhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle,, rated in the king's books at £1. 1. 0., endowed with £1000 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of Mrs. Dacre. The church, dedicated to St.|Cuthbert, is a good and uniform specimen of the Norman style. Here is a place of worship for the Society of Friends. This parish is bounded on the north by the river Line. Near Kirk-Linton hall are the remains of an. ancient fortress. The celebrated watchmaker, George Graham,. esteemed the best mechanic of his time, was a native of this place.
