KNIVETON, a parish in the hundred of WIRKSWORTH,
county of DERBY, 3 miles (N. E.) from Ashbourn,
containing 394 inhabitants. The living is a
perpetual curacy, endowed with £ 600 royal bounty, and
£200 parliamentary grant, and in the peculiar jurisdiction
and patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield and
Coventry. The church is dedicated to St. John the
Baptist. A school was endowed by John Kurd, in
1715, with a small rent-charge for the instruction of
poor children, twelve of whom are educated gratuitously.
Kniveton is in the honour of Tutbury, duchy of Lancaster,
and within the jurisdiction of a court of pleas
held at Tutbury every third Tuesday, for the recovery of
debts under 40s.
