LAMESLEY, a chapelry in that part of the parish of CHESTER-le-STREET which is in the middle division of CHESTER ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 3 miles (S.) from Gateshead, containing 1720 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Durham, endowed with £600 private benefaction, and £2100 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of Lord Ravensworth. The chapel, which is of ancient foundation, was rebuilt in 1759. There are extensive mines of coal, several quarries of stone for grindstones, and some beds of iron-stone, in the parish. A free school was built in 1814, and is supported by Lord Ravensworth, for the instruction of twenty-five boys: Lady Ravensworth allows an annual stipend for the education of girls.
