LATHBURY, a parish in the hundred of NEWPORT, county of BUCKINGHAM,half of a mile (N.) from Newport- Pagnell, containing 164 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £5. 6. 8., endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Dean and Canons of Christ Church, Oxford. The church is dedicated to All Saints. A free grammar school was founded and endowed with £ 12 per annum, in the reign of Elizabeth, by Anthony Cave; the right of appointing the master was vested in the Dean and Canons of Christ Church college; he likewise gave two exhibitions, of £6 each, for the scholars: the endowment has been lost, and the school-room was taken down in 1698. The learned Dr. Chelsam, celebrated for his defence of Christianity, against Gibbon, held this living. The parish is nearly surrounded by the river Ouse; an ancient monastery formerly occupied the site of the present manor-house.
