LEICESTER-ABBEY, a liberty (extra-parochial), in the western division of the hundred of GOSCOTE, county of LEICESTER., 1 mile (N.) from Leicester, containing 15 inhabitants. An abbey of Black canons, in honour of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was founded here, in 1143, by Robert Bossu, Earl of Leicester, the revenue of which, at the dissolution, was estimated at £ 1002. 0. 4., and the site granted by Edward VI. to the Marquis of Northampton. There are slight remains of the conventual buildings, the most remarkable portion of which is an outer wall, exhibiting on its face an inscription wrought in bricks of different colours.
