LEIRE, a parish in the hundred of GUTHLAXTON, county of LEICESTER, 4 miles (N.N.W.) from Lutterworth, containing 435 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Leicester, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £Q. 14. 9-, and in the patronage of the Countess de Grey. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. A school-room has been erected by a subscription entered into by the parishioners, to celebrate the peace in 1814: it is a good brick building, covered with slate, and capable of accommodating seventy children. Leire is in the honour of Tutbury, duchy of Lancaster, and within the jurisdiction of a court of pleas held at Tutbury every third Tuesday, for the recovery of debts under 40s.
