LETCOMB-BASSETT, a parish in the hundred of KINTBURY-EAGLE, county of BERKS, 3 miles (S. W. by S.) from Wantage, containing 280 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £15. 0. 2., and in the patronage of the President and Fellows of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to All Saints. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. The ancient Iknield-street crosses the Vale of White Horse, in this parish. Dean Swift, during his residence at the rectory in 1714, wrote his pamphlet entitled " Free Thoughts on the Present State of Affairs," but it was not printed till 1741.
