LIDGATE, a parish in the hundred of RISBRIDGE, county of SUFFOLK, 6 miles (S. E. by E.) from Newmarket, containing 389 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £15. 10. 5., and in the patronage of the Duke of Rutland. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Here was an ancient castle, called King John's Castle, of unknown origin. Lydgate the poet, who was also a monk of Bury, was born here.
