LIFTON, a parish in the hundred of LIFTON, county of DEVON, 4 miles (E. by N.) from Launceston, containing 1214 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Totness, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £31. 2. 11., and in the patronage of Harris Arundel, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Two schools are supported by voluntary contributions: there are mines of manganese in this parish. The rivers Tonkay and Lyd flow in the vicinity. Cattle fairs are held on the 2nd of February, on Holy Thursday, and October 28th. There is a medicinal spring near Lifton bridge.
