LOSTOCK a hamlet in the parish of BOLTON, hundred of SALFORD, county palatine of LANCASTER, 4 miles (W.) from Great Bolton, containing 576 inhabitants. An unendowed school was erected by subscription, on an allotment of land given by the commissioners of enclosures for the instruction of poor children of the neighbourhood; about thirty children are instructed at a small charge. Here are the remains of a- very ancient mansion, called Lostock hall, bearing date 1563; the gateway is of stone, and the royal arms, with the date 1590, are over the highest bay window: it is supposed to have been the residence of the Andertons.
