MACHEN, a parish in the lower division of the hundred of WENTLLOOG, county of MONMOUTH, 3 miles (W. by N.) from Newport, containing 1032 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Llandaff, rated in the king's books at £10. 16. 5., and in the patronage of Sir Charles Morgan, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. There is a place of worship forWesleyan Methodists. The rivers Ebba and Rumsey run through the parish, in which are mines of coal, lead, iron, and calamine, also several mineral springs. There are the remains of an old building, called "the Castle," but no record of its history.
