MALDEN, a parish in the second division of the hundred of KINGSTON, county of SURREY, 2 miles (N. by W.) from EweU, containing 250 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Chessington, in the archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £8. 5., and in the patronage of the Warden and Fellows of Merton College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to .St. John: near it - is the site of the original establishment of Merton College, founded in 1264, and removed to Oxford in 1267. A small but rapid stream, called the Hogs-Mill river, rises in this parish, and falls into the Thames at Kingston. In the chapelry of Chessington is a powerful chalybeate spring, termed Jessop's well, once much celebrated, but now almost forsaken.
