MALLING (EAST), a parish in the hundred of LARKFIELD, lathe of AYLESFORD, county of KENT, 4 miles (W.N.W.) from Maidstone, containing 1403 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury, rated in the king's books at £10. 8. 4., and in the patronage of Sir J. Twisden, Bart. The church, dedicated to St. James, is a handsome structure, with a square western tower. A fair for pedlary is held on August 6th. James Tomlyn, in 1752, bequeathed a rent-charge of £5, for teach- in poor children; and the Rev.Edward Holme, in 1781, erected, and endowed with lands, a school, in which about fifty children are educated.
