MARTON (LONG), a parish in EAST ward, county of WESTMORLAND, 4 miles (N. N. W.) from Appleby, containing 714 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, rated in the king's books at £21. 15.7., and in the patronage of the Earl of Thanet. The church, dedicated to St. Margaret, is a large edifice. A commodious place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists was erected here in 1816. The village of Long Marton, one of the most considerable in the county, having been rebuilt within the last twenty years, presents an appearance of neatness and opulence. Marton Plouse, a handsome stone edifice, situated at its northern extremity, is occupied by the principal agent tonthe London Lead Company, whose mining office is here. A trifling endowment left by Thomas Machel, and two annual donations by Miss Fearon and Mrs. Rippon, are applied in teaching poor children.
