MARWOOD, a parish in the hundred of BRAUNTON,
county of DEVON, 3 miles (N. by W.) from Barnstaple,
containing 869 inhabitants. The living is a
rectory, in the archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and diocese
of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £24. 8. 6ij.,
and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of St.
John's College, Cambridge. The church, dedicated to
St. Michael, has an ancient wooden screen. There were
formerly two chapels within the parish, one at Patsford,
now converted into a cow-house, the other at Whitefield,
of which only two pillars remain. Here is a school,
endowed, in 1782, by the Rev. R. Harding, with about
£ 10 per annum, and, in 1814, with £ 100 three per cents.,
by William Westacott. Judge Littleton is said to have
been born at West Marwood.
